Patti Smith fait partie de ces artistes dont la légende précède l'écoute. Lestre Bangs déisait d'elle qu'elle était «Une chieuse qui réussit le prodige d'être simultanément une idole des femmes et un objet de désir des hommes [et des femmes, sans doute].» Souvent considérée comme une intellectuelle dans le monde de l'underground new yorkais, égérie du pré-punk, elle est avant tout une des grandes figures du rock. C'est en 1975 qu'elle forme le Patti Smith Group avec deux de ses acolytes, le guitariste Lanny Kaye et le pianniste Richard Sohl, bientôt rejoints par le bassiste Ivan Kral et le batteur Jay Dee Daugherty.

Un premier single Hey Joe/Piss Factory sort, suivi de peu par l'album Horses. Coproduit par John Cale (ex-V.U), le disque est un événement, à la charnière du rock des années 60 et du punk en gestation. Outre une version époumonée de "Gloria", des Them, elle y déroule ses vers fluides, choquants et sensuels avec une intensité émotionnelle rarissime, peut être trop pour pouvoir s'imposer dans les hits parades américains (même si elle reçoit en France le prix de l'Académie Charles-Cros). Pattis Smith devient cependant une des figures de proue du féminisme dans le rock, opposant sa poésie féminine au machisme rock.

Le chant de Patti nous retient. On appreciera le crescendo de "Free Money", "Land" puise ses racines dans le rock: Les Stones ne sont pas loin, où elle pose sa voix rauque, cassée souvent et douce, voire androgyne parfois qui nous transporte dans cet univers tressé de vers poétiques. La pochette, signée par le photographe Robert Mapplethorpe, est un bijou et l'ensemble un grand moment du rock.

Another Brick in the Wall (part3)

La troisième et dernière partie de la trilogie "Another brick in the wall" se situe dans le présent, au moment où le mur est quasiment achevé. Cette chanson revient sur toutes les colères, les craintes, les angoisses, bref, toutes les émotions contenues dans les chansons précédentes, en les faisant ressurgir violement. Pink y exprime son rejet de tout ce qui l'entoure, en déclarant qu'il n'a besoin de rien ni de personne parce qu'il a compris de quoi la vie était réellement faite. Il a vu "le message sur le mur".

Il y a une différence notable au niveau des paroles, par rapport aux deux précédentes parties : en effet, on n'y mentionnait qu'une seule brique de plus dans le mur alors qu'ici, Pink déclare que "ce n'était que des briques (au pluriel) de plus dans le mur". Cela suggère que, contrairement aux chansons précédentes qui décrivaient les différentes étapes de la fabrication du mur, celle-ci y met un terme, et le mur est terminé. Les briques sont en place.
Dans le film, on nous montre des scènes de la vie de Pink entrecoupées d'images d'émeutes. La vie de Pink est comparable à une émeute, en ce sens qu'elle est incontrôlable.
